A leak that may have come from the Australian Secu

ty Intelligence Organization suggested that Chinese-Australians contesting local government elections represented securit

y threats because they might have belonged to an organization called the “Australian Council for the Promotion of Peace

ful Reunification of China”. Actually, none of the candidates mentioned has ever been associated with ag

itation or lobbying on issues of concern to Beijing such as the South China Sea, Taiwan or Tibet.

Worst example of anti-China prejudice

One of the worst examples of anti-China prejudices comes from a bo

ok written by a professor of public ethics, Clive Hamilton-Silent Invasion published in earl

y 2018. On pages 280-281 Hamilton writes that up to 40 percent of the Chinese in Australia are disloyal. Speci

fically, he says they are ready “to take to the streets to express their loyalty to Beijing-in other words, to Australia’s enemy”.

The monkeys implanted with human genes developed bett

better short-term memory and faster reaction times compared with the control group, acco

rding findings published March 27 in the China-based journal National Science Review.

The study also found that transgenic monkeys’ brains took longer to develop, in a similar fashion to humans.

The experiment has divided the scientific community however, with a number of Western scientists criticizing it as uneth

ical, while some went as far to suggest, perhaps ironically, that it could lead to a Planet of the Apes-type scenario.

The Kunming Institute of Zoology told China Daily in a statement that the experiment was ethically approved in 2010.

In 2015 the animal rights committee of Kunming Biomed International, a research organiza

tion specializing in nonhuman primates, also declared the animals were being treated humanely in every

step of the experiment, in accordance with domestic and international regulations, the statement said.

Indeed, Premier Li Keqiang, who led China’s negotiati

tions at the Brussels summit, has pledged to intensify discussions on the rules concerning in

dustrial subsidies, a priority for the WTO reform for the EU. This is being seen as a breakthrough by the EU side.

In fact, almost all countries provide subsidies for domestic companies in certain sectors, and i

n most cases, China has given subsidies to Chinese companies in strict accordance with WTO rules as its ultim

ate goal is to achieve complete marketization. Yet intensifying discussions on industrial subsidies and other

sensitive issues, including intellectual property rights protection, is a step that must be taken to not only addre

ss WTO members’ concerns, but also invigorate the organization and the global trading system.

China, US should jointly promote WTO reform

Chen Fengying, a senior researcher in world economy at the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations

The Office of the United States Trade Representative seems to have made dr

iving the WTO reform its priority so that Washington can claim the discourse rights in global t

rade mechanisms and lead the process for making new trade rules and establishing a new global trading system.

As one of the most recognized movie events in Chin

ina, the festival-which will be held through April 20-recently announced 15 nominated fil

ms, including The Composer, which will contend for the festival’s top honor, the Tiantan Award.

Inspired by a speech made by President Xi Jinping during his v

isit to Kazakhstan in 2013, the film looks back at the life of Xian, a music

ian who was once a household name and best known for his epic work, Yellow River Cantata.

When the Great Patriotic War (the Soviet Union’s defensive war again

st the invasion of Nazi Germany) broke out in 1941, Xian-who was assigned by the Commu

nist Party of China to work in Moscow-found himself stranded in Almaty, the largest city in Kazakhstan.

With the help of Kazakh musician Bakhytzhan Baikadamov and his family, Xian spent his final years living out the war in K

azakhstan, where he concentrated on writing music. In early 1945, the musician who was suffering fro

m multiple diseases was sent back to Moscow, where he died in a local hospital on Oct 30 the same year.

hina to ease permanent residency requirements in lar

China said Monday it will ease the requirements for permanent residency in many large cities as part of its new urbanization push.

Restrictions on permanent residence permits should be scrapped in cities with populatio

ns between 1 million and 3 million, according to a document outlining key urbanization tasks this year release

d by the National Development and Reform Commission, the country’s top economic planner.

For cities with populations of 3 million to 5 million, the qualifications for such permits should be “fully relaxed,” and the restrictions

for certain key groups of people to get such permits should be removed, the document said.

Previously, the country has already gradually abolished permanent residency restrictions in

small and medium-sized cities and towns with populations below 1 million.

The NDRC document also demanded cities with populations above 5

million to improve their policies and drastically expand the scale of permanent residency.

Beyond Parallel reported there has been “activity” at a verti

ical engine test pad and a launch pad’s rail-mounted rocket transfer structure. It concluded that the activity was “deliberate and purposeful.”

The CIA declined to comment on the photographs.

South Korean lawmaker Lee Hye-hoon told CNN Wednesday that the country’s Nationa

l Intelligence Service (NIS) revealed in a briefing that there has been restoration activity at Tongchang-ri.

  Tongchang-ri activity

Though the satellite images provide useful information, analysts and experts caution

against reading too much into them without sufficient intelligence to complement.

”If North Korea does something they want us to know, they would say it. They haven’t said

anything,” said Joseph Yun, the State Department’s former special representative for North Korea policy.

”We don‘t know enough to say one way or the other. My own guess is it’s too early to think that this is a response to happen in Hanoi,” Yun said.

Joel Wit, a former State Department diplomat and founder of 38 North, said on Twitter that the movement at Ton

gchang-ri did not provide any evidence that North Korea was preparing to test an intercontinental ballistic missile.

Preparatory tests for manned space station mission to star

China will start launching preparatory tests for its manned space station

mission in the second half of this year, according to the China Manned Space Agency.

The agency said in a statement on Monday that the core module of the space station, a Long M

arch 5B carrier rocket and payloads to be carried by the rocket’s maiden flight will be transported to the Wen

chang Space Launch Site in the island province of Hainan in the second half of 2019 to conduct joint tests and drills.

After those tests and drills, the Long March 5B rocket will carry out its debut flight at the Wen

chang site at a proper time, the agency said, without giving an exact time for the launch.

Sources close to China’s manned space program said that after the maiden flight, Long March 5B will be tasked with lifting part

s of the nation’s first manned space station into space where those parts will be assembled by astronauts.

Currently, the space station’s core module and a Long March 5B are under construct

On Friday, a standoff occurred between a local indigenous comm

unity and the military over aid delivery near Gran Sabana, on the Brazil-Venezuela border, said the town’s mayor, Emilio Go

nzalez. He told CNN the military opened fire on an indigenous group trying to facilitate the passage of aid into Venezuela.

Gonzalez said soldiers shot and killed a 34-year-old indigenous Venezuelan woman and injured 17 others.

National Assembly member Americo De Grazia said on his official Twitter feed that two

people had died. The second victim was an indigenous man, according to De Grazia.

Gonzalez said indigenous guards detained 27 Venezuelan military members. Venez

uela’s Ministry of Defense told CNN it had no information on the incident.

  Tensions escalate over aid

Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido, who invoked a constitutional provision last month to declare himself acting

president, condemned the incident in a tweet Friday, saying such acts by the military “will not go unpunished.”
